80% coverage on core features

Sealing Technologies (SealingTech), a Parsons Corporation company, is a veteran-founded global leader in providing edge computing hardware and defensive cybersecurity solutions for the federal government and private enterprises. In shifting away from developing internal tools to a model that launched a suite of customer-facing applications, SealingTech set out to ensure they maintained the best possible user experience for their customers, while continuing to accelerate the development velocity of its applications. Through a strategic collaboration with mabl, SealingTech established an agentic testing foundation that scales quality without the expense of additional headcount.

  • 86% Reduction in Testing Time: Testing with mabl greatly reduced manual and scripted approach times, while maintaining complete coverage on new features and executing their regression suite.
  • Complex UI Automation: Successfully automated testing for SealingTech’s Kit Deployment Software, a product featuring complex drag-and-drop network diagrams that was traditionally difficult to automate.
  • Avoided Specialist Headcount: Enabled the existing team to handle the test creation, execution, and maintenance while enabling faster velocity—all without the expense of needing additional personnel.
  • 4x Faster Test Creation: Test creation cycles were reduced to just 15 minutes, compared to 60 minutes (and multiple reworks) using traditional methods.

The Challenge

Prior to mabl, SealingTech relied on manual ad-hoc testing for its internal tools. As the company transitioned its applications to customer-facing, it began the search for a solution that would ensure the quality and user experience of its tools kept up with the speed of development. Without a dedicated QA team and knowing their developers were already at capacity, they needed a platform that could automate complex scenarios quickly without becoming a maintenance burden. This transition was essential in making the kind of first impression that’s essential for revenue generation and SealingTech’s brand reputation.

Goals in Using mabl

When Brian Miller, SealingTech QA Automation Lead, began his search for a solution, his primary objective was to “build quality in,” rather than leaving it to be tested at the end of the development cycle. Additionally, any platform he works with needs to handle high-risk, difficult-to-automate scenarios, specifically around the drag-and-drop features and visual verifications in their flagship Kit Deployment Software.

From a leadership perspective, the goal is to scale the current team’s abilities to meet business needs without the need to add costly headcount. By utilizing an agentic digital teammate, SealingTech’s team can increase product velocity and identify bugs and regressions before they reach production and maintain a top-notch customer experience.

Implementation

The decision to adopt mabl stemmed from a thorough evaluation of 7 potential tools. All the tools were compared for their usability, support, ability to automate testing of most UI elements, and robustness of tests. After initial reviews of ACCELQ, Browserstack, Cypress, and TestComplete, these were removed from consideration as they were either not user friendly or did not meet the evaluation requirements. Brian installed and conducted assisted demos of Katalon and Testim; however, neither tool was able to meet the testing needs for the requirements being evaluated. Ultimately, mabl was selected for its ease of use, ability to automate nearly all of the most difficult UI elements, and auto-healing capabilities, which Brian calls nearly "bulletproof" against the UI changes that typically break with scripted frameworks.

SealingTech’s adoption of the mabl platform is bolstered by an onboarding that includes internal training sessions, something Brian describes as “one of the most helpful things” for achieving the team’s buy-in. They can now leverage agentic testing capabilities like GenAI Assertions, which helps to validate their GenAI solution, Operator X™, and take advantage of mabl’s low-code test authoring to create tests from an end-user’s perspective, making automation easy and accessible to the entire development team.

"Using mabl, I was able to create, execute, and analyze a complete user test workflow in under 15 minutes. It would have taken me at least 60 minutes to complete this same process the old way."
— Brian Miller, SealingTech Test Automation Lead

Benefits: Quality as a Shared Practice

It didn’t take long for the impact of mabl to be realized. SealingTech successfully bridged the gap between development speed and maintaining a great user experience. By sharing weekly test reports with management and the development team, Brian increased visibility into successful testing practices and ensured that defects were proactively captured before reaching production.

Beyond speed, the team was able to achieve 80% feature test coverage for their core products. This is a process that, when done manually, would have taken two people two weeks and can now be built in a fraction of the time, expediting our solution to market.

Conclusion

Leadership and engineering teams at SealingTech now view mabl as a strategic collaborator in their mission to provide cutting-edge cybersecurity solutions, with a long-term vision that includes integrating mabl directly into their continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipeline. This will enable automated smoke tests when code merges and the ability to spin up temporary development environments for branch-level testing. As the team looks to the future, SealingTech is empowered to innovate faster while maintaining high-quality standards for its customers.
